【Introduction】

Dongquan Lighthouse is located on Dongju Island just south of the Mazu Archipelago. For this reason, it is also known as the Dongju Lighthouse. Because it was built on Dongquan Mountain, it was originally called Dongquan Mountain Lighthouse. It was built in 1872 by the British firm, Chance Brothers and Company Ltd. from Birmingham. The lighthouse is a hollow cylindrical tower built from granite which tapers slightly as it ascends. Inside the tower, a spiral stone staircase provides access to the top of lighthouse where one can find a scaffold complete with an iron railing and a domed cast-iron lantern room with a weather vane. Inside the lantern room is a Class 2 double-wick petroleum lamp with rotating lens capable of emitting a flash of light three times every 20 seconds. A windbreaker partition was erected between the lighthouse and the office to facilitate entry and exit by the keepers during inclement weather. The two muzzle-loading fog guns next to the lighthouse used to fire warning shots during low visibility are important artifacts of the lighthouse.Among the existing Western-style lighthouses in Taiwan and Fujian, Dongquan Lighthouse was the first to be built using granite. Geographically, the lighthouse is the most visible landmark at the entry of the Min River estuary from eastern Guangdong and stands as a lasting testament to the unequal treaties signed between China and the West.
