Qionglin, previously known as Pinglin, was granted its name by Emperor Xizong during the Tianqi reign of the Ming dynasty. The Jiyang ancestral lineage, which is one of the two major lineages of Cai clan in Kinmen, is also known as the Qionglin lineage since it has lived in Qionglin for generations. The Qionglin Cai Clan divided into nine branches and lived in an area stretching nearly 9.88 acres. Each branch built its own ancestral shrine, including Yigu Hall, Dacuofang for the tenth generation ancestors; Kengqian for the sixth generation; Xincanxia sub-branch for the sixth and tenth generations, Xincanshang sub-branch for the eleventh generation, Qiantingfang for the sixth generation, Fanbo and the Cai family temple. It is the Kinmen settlement with the most ancestral shrines and clan temples. Apart from ancestral shrines, a large Cai family temple was built at the residence of the founding patriarch, Cai Shiqilang. The temple is a two-row compound structure, where tablets of the founding patriarchs and the five subsequent generations, as well as any outstanding scholar-officials and the gentry from the clan are enshrined and worshipped. It also serves as an assembly place for the town people to discuss village affairs. The existing family temple was built in 1770 with sophisticated wood craftsmanship despite its small size. The Fanbo shrine enshrines Cai Shou Yu exclusively. Fangbo was a common term used for vice governor in the old days. The shrine is also known as “Vice Governor’s Ancestral House” since Cai Shouyu once served as a vice governor in the Chunnan area. This three-bay compound house is composed of two-row houses along with two corridors and features three doors for the central room. The red doors are characteristic of an imperial conferred official residence.
