【Introduction】

The Tainan Railway Station built in 1900 (the 33rd year of Emperor Meiji) initially was a large Western-style wooden structure. Afterwards, to accommodate growing demand for transportation services, the station was rebuilt to become a steel-reinforced concrete building in 1936, and it is the only remaining two-story train station in Taiwan built in the Japanese colonial era. The design for the station took on a T-shape layout with a left-right symmetry; for the hallways there are three arched passages to serve as entrances and provide access for passengers to the lobby and to the vehicles. Ticketing booths are located in a two-story high lobby with a high ceiling. To allow more natural light into the space, there are seven elongated arched windows installed at the top. These windows have distinctively become highlights when looked at from the exterior of the station.Between the ticketing lobby and the train platforms is a service area where waiting rooms, luggage rooms, cargo storage areas, office spaces, restrooms and lockers can be found. On the left side are a foyer and a VIP room where a stairway provides private entry and access to a guesthouse and a restaurant. On the second floor, beside the wide hallways that allow one to overlook the grand lobby, there are other facilities that include a cloakroom, a reception room, a bar, a meal preparation room, a kitchen, several diners and canteens as well as nine guestrooms. These conveniences were obviously far superior to those any other train station could provide at the time.
