【Introduction】

The old barracks used to be located in what is now the Guangfu Campus of National Cheng Kung University. Built in 1912, (the first year of Emperor Taisho), the barracks were designed by the Army Management Department under the Taiwan Governor-General's Office. Three buildings still remain; the commanding officer’s quarters, the superior and staff’ offices, and an assembly hall for officers. In 1923, in the 12th year of Emperor Taisho, Crown Prince Hirohito planted a banyan tree in the yard. Today the tree is seen as a symbol for the spirit of National Cheng Kung University. After World War II, the Chinese Nationalist Army was in charge of the barracks. The location was used as the headquarters for the 2nd,10th, and 8th Army Forces. The premises were eventually handed over to National Cheng Kung University for use as school buildings. Elongated layouts and European-style arcade architecture with corridors on all sides are some shared structural features shared by all the buildings. The corridors on the east, west, and north sides are wider, while the one on the south is slightly narrower. On an overall vertical plane, left-right symmetry is used to emphasize its dignified quality. The ground floor is elevated to provide extra space for ventilation and to prevent humidity. The roof is built with a Fink roof truss and steel truss structures. The design of the front pediment comes from a pre-cast concrete component. The floor structure is constructed with Kahn Trussed Bars, which were patented in the 1910s. The siding adopted modern structural engineering methods of the time such as fish bone steel expansion beams in the 20th century.
